Maintaining a Blog/Life Balance

Tags: , , , ,

Its with some irony that I noticed several links tonight regarding a Blog/Life Balance, i’ve just worked 11 hours straight in my day job, spent a couple of hours with an ex girlfriend catching up and watching tv and finally i’m home for the night where i am blogging before sleep.

First and foremost Wendy Boswell has written a great article How to get things done working inside and outside the home where she provides tips and insight into how she balances life, work and time with her husband. For those feeling under the gun its well worth a read.

Darren Rowse has picked up and expanded with his ideas on Maintaining a Blog Life Balance which is interesting and valuable reading. Darren makes very valid points and i particularly agreed with these two quotes

It’s very easy to allow blogging to overtake one’s life - the computer just sits there in the corner of your home tempting you to come have a look at what’s happening on your blog

But there comes a point where many bloggers need to think about creating healthy boundaries around it in order to maintain other relationships, work on our physical well being and to just have a life.

Its all common sense stuff but when blog addiction takes over its easy to forget where priorities lie.

Similarly David at Blogging Pro has also posted on Maintaining a Blog/Life Balance and has offered some advice of his own including:

You just have to find time for yourself. The web will be there when you get back.

For my five cents worth I agree fully with all the authors. My personal thoughts are as follows:

  • Given the choice of blogging or time with friends or family, go with the friends
  • Don’t blog because you feel you have to, blog when you enjoy blogging
  • Set time frames, i’ll do these posts and then i’ll do something non blog related.
  • Don’t be afraid to not post for a day or two. The blogosphere will still be there when you get back
  • Look for how you can combine blogging with something else you enjoy. I love photography and naturally have a photoblog which is my pride and joy where i post a picture daily for the world to see.

So there is my 5 cents worth along with the experts
