AdSense Tips and Tools

Inside AdSense has posted twice with some usful information and Tools.

Site Dignostics page:

If you’ve ever wondered whether our crawler is able to reach all of your pages, you should try out the new Site Diagnostics tool. To determine the meaning of your site and show relevant ads, our crawlers need to be able to access your pages. Site Diagnostics enables you to see some of the errors our crawler finds while it’s crawling. You can find the Site Diagnostics page listed under the Reports tab of your account.

Optimization Tips Page:

If you’ve been roving around the AdSense Help Center, you may have noticed there’s now a bigger, better version of our Optimization Tips page. If you’re new to optimization, or just looking for some new ideas to increase your earnings, you may find the new page especially helpful. We’ve added more info on choosing successful color palettes and how to enrich your site through effective use of Google services like Blogger, AdWords, and Sitemaps (among others). You’ll also find new, detailed suggestions for improving your AdSense performance on specific kinds of sites like blogs and forums. Many of the entries now include images like screenshots and heatmaps to make our tips easier to understand, and we think the new layout will make the whole thing easier to absorb and implement.

Adsense’s Days Numbered

According to Brian Clark of Copyblogger the days of Adsense may be drawing to a close:

Market research firm Outsell released a report Wednesday that shows what many already knew — that click fraud in contextual pay per click advertising is a big problem. The report reveals that 14.6 percent of all clicks are bogus, and that 27 percent of advertisers reduced or stopped spending on click-based advertising.

Brian goes on to suggest that affiliate marketing is going to make a strong resurgence. Rather than steal all of Brians thunder you can read the full article over on Copyblogger or Performancing.com. I would go further and suggest that more than likely advertisers like Text Link Ads are also going to reap the reward of the death of Adsense as we know it.

How Content Affects Adsense Income

Tags: , ,

Chris Garrett has written a great post in response to a user comment detailing How Content Affects Adsense Income. Some of the points included:

  1. Be concious of your page titles - vague and non-commercial page titles give vague and non-commercial ads. The title (and filename interestingly enough, which on most blogs now are synonymous) has a disproportionate influence on which ads show up. Try and insert a company/product/service into titles that risk not performing.
  2. Always come back to money posts - Steer the content back to more commercial topics after addressing less commercial subjects. I wouldn’t encourage you to make a previously non-commercial blog 100% commercial as that is dangerously veering towards the splog. A good mix is probably best.
  3. Post commercial posts last - In a blogging day you want to leave the commercial topic top of page for longest. Overnight you don’t want the top post to be "and by the way my cat did the cutest thing" when you have a "Brand X announces update to product Y" post right under it. The top post can often influence the ads for the whole index page.
  4. Use section targeting- Section targeting is an adsense feature that allows you to influence adsense to take more notice of certain content than others using comment tags. It doesn’t work brilliantly for me but I have heard it can help.
